Brightwood Farm

Brightwood Farm is small (5 acres) and diverse (plants and animals). We grow a broad variety of vegetables, year round, as well as perennial berries and fruit. At this scale, we can produce enough high quality compost (thanks to the manure from our family cows) to amend our soil and help keep our soil microbes healthy and happy. We disturb the soil minimally to incorporate cover crops and manure, ensuring that we encourage a thriving community of beneficial fungi and bacteria in the soil which in turn make the abundant minerals in our soil available to our vegetable plants. We manage our pasture through micro-scale rotational grazing with a few cows and are actively regenerating healthy pasture grasses and forbs. We recycle as many nutrients as possible on the farm, by composting plant material and manure as soil amendment, adding specific mineral amendments to increase our food's nutrient density. After 20 years of organic farming in Virginia, we are happy to be growing here, since 2019, in the excellent soil of the Animas River valley in southwest Colorado.
