Osage Orchards

We currently have costumers interested in organically grow fruits and vegetables. We grow Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) trees for the fruit for biochemicals and bioenergy. We practice agroforestry row cropping with the trees and vegetable production. Hopefully, we will obtain our USDA organic certification within one year. We have a pilot plant in which we process the fruit. The seeds are high in oil (38%), proteins and starches and the fruit mass is high in iso-flavanoids and phytosterols. We also are experimenting with raising Black Soldier Fly Larvae and Silk Worms. The fly larvae are feed and raised on the fruit and the silk worms are grown on the tree leaves (the tree is in the same family as the Mullberry). Our objective is to create industrial tree crop which will produce bioproducts, biochemicals and bioenergy while sequestering large amounts of carbon. The trees begin bearing fruit at 7-10 years and will produce fruit for over 75 years. The wood is the most dense and the strongest tree on North America. The trees are disease, insect, drought and freeze resistant. The wood tree posts will survive for up to 100 years.
